Looking for a hardy, beautiful fish? The pearl gourami is the one that will complete your will. This fish originates from the shallow acidic freshwater areas of Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. Those areas are heavily vegetated. They have a peaceful temperament even if during the spawning season, they tend to be little aggressive towards other fish who come near they nest.
These fish can be pretty demanding so it is recommended to have a little experience in fish keeping before opting for the pearl gourami but with a certain amount of know how, these fish will be the perfect fish for you.
Pearl gourami are also referred as mosaic, lace or diamond gourami due to their patterns across their body but these names are not too common. They can be found in almost every pet store around the world and if you get a healthy specimen, it can live up to 5 years in your tank if you take care of it.
Most of their time, they will swim around the mid to upper part of the tank. Sometimes you will even see them head to the surface. This is completely normal as pearl gourami are equipped with a special organ called the labyrinth organ which helps them to breathe in air directly from the atmosphere.
No one can deny that pearl gourami are very beautiful and it is why it is a very sought fish specie. Their body is covered with white pearl-like spots and a thin black bar which runs along their side. They have thin, large and wide fins which give them a delicate and elegant look. They also have a pair of pelvic fins that will be hanging beneath while they swim, these pelvic fins can be as long as their body.
Sexing is pretty easy with pearl gourami. The males will develop a red breast while maturing also their dorsal fins are longer and larger.
